The time has come for the Apple to announce its next iPhone, and with lots of leaked news and info’s we all have assumed that the next version of the iPhone will be named iPhone 5S. This is because of all the rumors pointing to it and folkloric tradition of the company also invites us to believe. The only point is that is it a good time to launch a model “S”? Keeping in mind that the Apple never had that much competition as they are facing at the moment, and many experts agree that the iPhone 5S could do much damage to the company’s position in the market. We have seen such reports published in different online tech magazines about the name of this next iPhone .
Ken Segall believes that an iPhone 5S would be like telling buyers that this is a sabbatical in the innovation of Apple
These statements come from nothing less than Ken Segall, former marketing director of Apple inc. In a blog post on April 4, Segall confirmed what many have long suspected about Apple’s confusing system for naming new products: It doesn’t make sense. Segall says that “S” is much more than a letter can mean the difference between selling the product or not, especially new buyers.
The truth is that Apple has never broken his pattern regarding the nomenclature which have been patched with their iPhone: the 3GS in 2009, the iPhone 4 in 2010, followed by the iPhone 4S in 2011 and finally the iPhone 5 launched last year. If we were asked to tell the next name in a quiz game surely everyone would write iPhone 5S. Segall says that Apple does not have to maintain this pattern forever, in fact we have seen how the iPad broke from its third generation, and renamed “New iPad”.
As noted by marketing expert, many customers might see on iPhone 5S a mere update of specifications, and even those that are more off the scene and aren’t interested much in technical specifications of the phone might fail to distinguish it from its predecessor. Ken Segall already mentioned the consequences of the letter “S” can make to the marketing of the new Apple product.
Thus as indicated the former employees of Apple also wants the company to keep a strict note on naming of the new device. The next iPhone whatever they name it is already the most anticipated smartphone of 2013, and when it comes out it already have to face the immense pressure from the ever growing Samsung, HTC and even the BlackBerry. Samsung has already aimed to sell their latest flagship Galaxy S4 over 100 million units.
Another factor that makes Apple to continue the naming trend is that the Sales of “S” model has always been higher than the original numbered models,i.e iPhone 4S has topped the sales of iPhone 4, same has happened with iPhone 3 and 3GS
