Samsung first smartphone with curved display is in the works. Samsung announced the update officially and also revealed that it won’t be a global device. As Samsung will initially launch it on the South Korean domestic market in order to view the public’s reaction to the new type of smartphone.

The Korean phone maker revealed a smartphone with a 5.5 inch flexible display earlier this year during CES 2013 tech fair.

Curved displays are an early stage in screen evolution which is shifting to bendable or foldable designs, eventually allowing mobile and wearable gadgets to take on new forms that could radically change the high end smartphone market. Samsung youm looked a lot like the company’s smartphones running Bada OS and flexible touch panel technology was used to effectively expand the screen on the edges of the terminal in order to display notification.

Samsung’s mobile business head of strategic marketing D.J. Lee said on Wednesday at an event launching the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone in Seoul,“We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October.”

In January Samsung, which has taken over from Apple Inc as the global smartphone leader, showed off prototype products with a flexible screen and a display that extends from the side of a device.

Samsung has also been moving into wearable technology, such as its Galaxy Gear wristwatch phone. Smartphones are now the dominant type of phone with CCS Insight expecting one billion to be sold in 2013 out of a total of 1.7 billion mobile phones.
