How to choose which parts of your “side hustle” to outsource.

It seems like these days, everybody has their own side hustle or side gig, and with the slightly volatile nature of the current job market, you could not fault their logic. With the uncertainty over the future, you would have difficulty blaming anybody who wanted to take matters into their own hands and start up on their own.

However, side hustles are usually one-person operations, and as such, are restricted by what one person can do. Along with your core activity (the thing that your side hustle does and the bit you get paid for) comes many other activities you didn’t count on at the start.

If you are in a position where you feel that you don’t have time to get everything done that you need to, here are a few pointers for things you could leave to the experts. Outsourcing the things you don’t want to do doesn’t have to involve a great deal of money and could free up your time to expand your side hustle into something that could replace your full-time job. If you run an e-commerce site, consider outsourcing your order fulfillment. Learn the 3PL definition (third-party logistics).

IT Firms

Your website

Regardless of what business you are in, you’ll need a website. With most customers making their first inquiry online, you’ll need somewhere for them to have their questions answered or make a purchase. Even if your side hustle involves selling on a platform like Amazon or Etsy, you’ll need somewhere your customers can find out more about you.

A lousy impression at this stage could ruin a long-term association, so hiring a professional web designer would be a good move. They are not as expensive as you might think, especially if you pick a local designer.

IT services

Another area that needs to be in top shape before you can get any bigger will be your IT services. You are going to generate a lot of data because all businesses do these days. You will also need to back that data up and have it protected from the types of cyberattacks that cause a large number of small companies like yours to go out of business every year.

As your business grows, you’ll need more storage, so having access to cloud storage will sidestep the need to buy larger servers constantly. As with the web designer, you may wish to stay local, and you can find one close to you quite easily. If you lived in Kansas City, you would perform a search for “IT companies Kansas City,” or if instead, you lived in Atalanta, you might search for “Atlanta IT services.

Accounting

If your bookkeeping involves a few handwritten notes on a pad a shoebox full of receipts, you’ll need to straighten this out before whatever you are doing can grow. Keeping accounts doesn’t have to involve a full-time accountant, but tying things up using an app to keep track of your money and scan your paperwork can keep things in order so you know where you are financially.

Just because you run a business doesn’t mean that you have to run all aspects of it. Try outsourcing one or all of these and keep your precious time to the tasks that need you.
