7 Effective Tips to Boost Mac’s Speed

If the Mac that once was new has now lost its speed and started performing not up to your preferred quality, know that you are not alone. A slow Mac is something that happens to many Mac users.

Once you start seeing the spinning beach ball more often than you would like, that is a clear indicator that it is time to initiate some maintenance work on your computer. Thus, even if you have an older Mac, you can still improve its speed and performance.

To help you bring your old Mac back to life and improve its efficiency, today we will share a list of 7 useful and effective tips that will speed up your Mac and also create more free disk space.

Mac Speed Booster

Tip #1: Clear Browser Cache Files

A slow browser may not always be a result of a slow network connection. Another thing that might be slowing your browsing down is too many tabs that you have open. Thus, if you are not using ten tabs at a time, make sure you only keep the ones you need.

Your browser stores temporary files called cache that is necessary to open your most visited websites and their elements faster. However, over time, these files pile up and slow down both your browser and computer.

To remove cache files from Safari browser, open the browser, open the Develop drop-down menu, and click the Empty Caches option.

Tip #2: Review Desktop Icons

If you want your old Mac to be fast again, it is important that you keep a clean desktop at all times. Having multiple items makes it tricky to remember large files you don’t even need anymore.

More to it, desktop icons are using the system’s resources, thus slowing down the entire performance of your Mac. If you need to keep most of your desktop icons on the screen for quick access, at least place them in a folder.

Tip #3: Learn How Much Free Disk Space Is Left

In the previous tip about the desktop, we mentioned how important it is to remove large unneeded files from your desktop. This is because free disk space has a direct influence on how fast your Mac will run.

Your objective should be to have at least 10% of free storage space on your Mac. Once it falls below 10%, your computer will begin to lag and underperform. You can check free disk space by clicking the Apple icon, then About This Mac, and choosing the Storage tab.

Tip #4: Use macOS Suggestions to Optimize Storage

When you open the Storage window, you will see how much space is taken up by apps and other types of files. If you see less than 10% free disk space left on your Mac, you should click the Manage button located on the right side of the window.

Once you click the Manage button, you will be navigated to another window that includes four suggestions that can help optimize storage space on Mac.

Tip #5: Remove Login Items

If it takes a while until your Mac turns on and you simply write it off on the computer being old, it may not be the case. In addition, this issue can be fixed really easily. It is possible that you have much more login items set to launch automatically after your Mac boots than you should.

To check your login item list, click the Apple icon, go to the System Preferences, then click Users & Groups, and finally open the Login Items menu.

Tip #6: Check the Activity Monitor

For those cases when the computer starts lagging, or you see the spinning beach ball after some of the apps just froze, it is most likely that you have some resource-heavy apps open that are using up most of the memory resources.

In order to check if this is the case, open the Spotlight Search and type in “Activity Monitor” in the search field. Then, navigate to the CPU tab and try closing the apps that are using up most of the resources.

Tip #7: Remove Large Files

To boost your Mac’s speed, you should remove large files that you no longer need. For example, if you work as a social media influencer or a YouTuber, you likely have a lot of large files you no longer need.

Also, check for such files that you have used for school projects and no longer need, movies that you have already watched, and so on. Another folder you should check is the Downloads folder. You will find a lot of random files that you have downloaded from the internet in there.
