Free VIN Lookup Tool: Decode Any VIN Instantly (NHTSA Data)
Paste any 17-character VIN below to decode it for free. This VIN lookup tool checks the VIN’s check digit, then pulls the make, model, year, engine, body, plant and safety equipment straight from the U.S. government’s NHTSA vPIC database. No sign-up, and nothing is stored.
17 characters. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN.
What This VIN Decoder Shows
The tool reads the VIN against NHTSA’s Product Information Catalog (vPIC). That is the same data manufacturers file with the U.S. government. You get:
- Identity: model year, make, model, trim and series
- Powertrain: engine size, cylinders, horsepower, fuel type, hybrid or EV level, drive type and transmission
- Body: body class, doors, seats and GVWR
- Origin: manufacturer, plant city and country
- Safety: airbag locations, ABS and stability control, when reported
Blank fields mean NHTSA has no data for that item. It does not mean the car lacks the feature.
What a VIN Lookup Does Not Show
A free decoder tells you what the car is, not what has happened to it. Accident history, title brands (salvage or flood), odometer readings and past owners come from paid history reports such as Carfax or AutoCheck, or from the U.S. NMVTIS system. For open safety recalls, check the VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this VIN lookup really free?
Yes. It uses NHTSA’s free public API and has no limits for normal use.
Why does it warn about the check digit?
North American VINs must pass the position-9 check-digit formula. A mismatch usually means a typo. Many European and Asian market vehicles don’t use the check digit, so the warning is normal for them.
Does it work for motorcycles and trucks?
Yes. Any vehicle with a 17-character VIN sold in the U.S. since 1981 can be decoded. Coverage is best for recent models.
Can I find the owner from a VIN?
No. Owner information is protected by the U.S. Driver’s Privacy Protection Act and is not in the NHTSA database.
