Pips hint today: hints and answers for the NYT Pips daily domino puzzle

What is Pips?

Pips launched in August 2025 as the first original logic game from NYT Games, expanding the lineup beyond word games into a numbers-and-pattern challenge. The name comes from the word “pip,” the dot shown on a domino or a die.

Each day you get three boards, Easy, Medium and Hard, plus a set of domino tiles with pip counts from zero to six on each half. The board is divided into colored regions, and every region carries a rule about the pips inside it. Your job is to drag every domino onto the board so that all the region rules hold at the same time. When one half of a domino lands in one region and the other half in another, both rules must be satisfied, and that is where the puzzle gets tricky.

A red dot on a rule symbol tells you the pips currently inside that region break its rule, so you always know exactly where the problem is. You can play on the official NYT Games site or in the NYT Games app.

Pips hint today for October 14, 2026

The October 14 board has not rolled over yet, so here are spoiler-free hints that work on every day’s puzzle, including today’s:

  • Read the strictest zone first. Zones with an exact-number rule or an equals rule are the most constrained on the board. Lock those dominoes in before you touch the free zones.
  • Save zero-pip dominoes for not-equal zones. A zero is hard to fit into sum rules, but it is gold in zones where every value must be different.
  • Rotate before you commit. Tapping a domino spins it 90 degrees, and a single flip can make the same tile satisfy two zones instead of one.
  • Work Easy, then Medium, then Hard. All three boards share the same zone layout, so the pattern you crack on Easy makes Hard much faster.
  • Check the red dots. After placing, glance at the rule symbols. Each red dot is the game pointing at exactly the zone that is wrong, so fix those zones one at a time instead of reshuffling the whole board.

How to play Pips

If this is your first pips hint today, the rules are simple:

  1. Drag dominoes from the tray onto the board. Tap a domino to rotate it before or after placing.
  2. Each colored zone shows a rule symbol. Meet every zone’s condition with the pips inside it.
  3. You must use every domino and satisfy every zone to complete the puzzle.

The zone rules:

  • = (Equal): all pips in the zone must be the same number.
  • Not equal: all pips in the zone must be different numbers.
  • Number (exact): the pips must add up to that exact total.
  • Greater than: the pips must sum to more than the shown number.
  • Less than: the pips must sum to less than the shown number.
  • No rule: free space where any domino fits.

Tips for faster Pips solves

Count the pips first. Before placing anything, scan your tray. If you are short on high numbers, the greater-than zones get priority for the big tiles.

Dominoes that straddle two zones solve two rules at once. These shared tiles are usually the key to the whole board. Place them early and build around them.

Undo is free. There is no penalty for tinkering, so test placements aggressively. A board that looks impossible often falls into place after one swapped tile.
