How to Play Wordle Hard Mode

Hard Mode is the one Wordle setting most players never turn on, largely because it’s tucked behind a gear icon and the game never mentions it. It takes about five seconds to enable and it changes how the puzzle plays more than the name suggests.

How to turn on Wordle Hard Mode

Open Wordle in your browser or the NYT Games app.
Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings.
Toggle Hard Mode on.

One catch worth knowing before you go looking: you can only switch Hard Mode on before you make your first guess. Once a puzzle is underway the toggle is locked, to stop players from switching to Easy Mode the moment they get stuck. If the toggle looks greyed out, that’s why — finish the puzzle and enable it tomorrow.

You can turn Hard Mode off at any time, including mid-puzzle. The restriction only runs one way.

What Hard Mode actually changes

The rule is simple: any hint you’ve revealed must be used in every subsequent guess.

Green letters must stay in the same position.
Yellow letters must appear somewhere in your next guess.
Grey letters are unaffected — you’re allowed to reuse them, though there’s rarely a reason to.

What it does not do is give you fewer guesses, a harder word, or a time limit. The solution is identical to everyone else’s that day. The difficulty comes entirely from having your options constrained.

Why this is genuinely harder

In normal Wordle, a common expert tactic is the probe word: you’re down to five candidates that differ by one letter each, so you spend a guess on a word that can’t possibly be right but tests several of those letters at once. Faced with SHARE, SHAME, SHAPE, SHAVE and SHADE, a normal-mode player might guess PRIMED to test P, R, M and D simultaneously, then win on the next go.

Hard Mode bans that. You must keep SHA_E and guess into it, which turns a guaranteed two-guess finish into a one-in-five gamble. Those “trap” word families are where Hard Mode streaks go to die.

The flip side is that it stops you wasting guesses. Plenty of players lose in normal mode by forgetting a yellow letter they uncovered three guesses ago. Hard Mode makes that impossible, so for less methodical players it can genuinely improve the win rate.

Should you turn it on?

Turn it on if you routinely solve in three or four and want the puzzle to take longer than ninety seconds, or if you keep losing to careless mistakes rather than genuinely hard words.

Leave it off if you care about your streak above all else. Hard Mode’s losses are concentrated in those trap families, and no amount of skill fully protects you from a SHA_E day.

One thing it doesn’t affect: your statistics are kept in the same place either way, so switching won’t reset your streak or your guess distribution. Your results grid gains a small asterisk when shared, which is the only outward sign you’re playing it.

Tips for playing in Hard Mode

Front-load your information. Because later guesses are constrained, the opening word matters far more than usual. A starter with three common consonants and two vowels — SLATE, CRANE, TRACE — buys you room you can’t buy back later.

Think about the third guess before you make the second. Ask what your second guess leaves you able to play. A second word that locks four greens can strand you with a family of five candidates and three guesses.

Prioritise position over presence. When you have a choice of valid guesses, pick the one that pins a yellow letter into a new position rather than the one testing a brand-new letter. Resolving where a known letter goes narrows the field faster under Hard Mode’s constraints.
