How Wordle works

Wordle gives you six attempts to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, the tiles change colour to tell you how close you are:

Green — correct letter, correct position.
Yellow — the letter is in the word, but somewhere else.
Grey — the letter isn’t in the word at all.

A new puzzle appears at midnight in your own local time zone, which is why the countdown above tracks your clock rather than New York’s. Everyone playing in the same time zone gets the same word.

The New York Times bought Wordle from creator Josh Wardle in 2022. It now sits alongside Connections, Strands, the Mini Crossword and Pips in the NYT Games app, and the base game remains free to play in a browser.

Three habits that lift your average

Open with vowel coverage, not a favourite word. Starters like CRANE, SLATE, ADIEU and AUDIO test three or more common letters at once. Which one you pick matters far less than using the same one every day — consistency is what lets you read the feedback quickly.

Spend guess two on new letters entirely. The most common mistake is rearranging guess one. If your opener returned two yellows, resist the urge to shuffle them; play a second word that shares nothing with the first and you’ll have tested ten letters by guess two.

Watch for doubles late. If you’re on guess four or five with three greens and nothing fits, a repeated letter is usually the culprit. Words like ABBEY, LLAMA, SASSY and MUMMY catch out players who assume five distinct letters.

Turning on Hard Mode

Hard Mode forces you to reuse every green and yellow letter in each subsequent guess. It removes the option of a throwaway probe word, which makes the puzzle noticeably tougher — and stops you burning a guess on letters you already know. Can Wordle repeat an answer?
No. Every solution is retired once used, which is why the archive above is genuinely useful for narrowing down guesses.

Is there a best Wordle starting word?
Analyses tend to favour CRANE, SLATE or TRACE for letter frequency, but the gap between the top few dozen openers is small. Picking one and sticking with it beats switching around.

Why does my answer differ from a friend’s?
Almost always a time zone gap — they’re a day ahead or behind. Occasionally it’s a cached browser tab; a hard refresh fixes it.
