NYT Strands Answers and Spangram Today
Strands is the one NYT puzzle where the theme clue tells you almost nothing until it suddenly tells you everything. Below you’ll find the theme, a spoiler-free nudge toward the spangram, and the full word list for September 19, 2026 hidden behind a click. Updated daily at rollover.

The hints above go in escalating order: today’s theme in plain English, then how many letters the spangram runs to and which edge of the grid it starts from. Most players who are stuck need the spangram and nothing else — once it lands, the remaining words tend to fall out on their own.
The complete list stays covered until you press Answer.

How Strands works
Strands gives you a 6×8 grid of letters and a cryptic theme clue. Every letter in the grid belongs to exactly one theme word, and you find words by dragging through adjacent tiles — horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and the path can bend as often as it likes.
Two things make it different from a normal word search:
- The spangram. One word or phrase touches two opposite sides of the grid and describes the theme directly. It highlights in yellow rather than blue, and unlike the other answers it can be a two-word phrase.
- Non-theme words earn hints. Find any valid three-letter-or-longer word that isn’t part of the theme, and you bank progress toward a hint. Three of them and the game highlights the letters of one theme word for you.
There’s no penalty for wrong guesses and no time limit. A new grid appears at midnight local time. Strands left beta and joined the main NYT Games line-up in 2024.
Getting unstuck
Farm hints deliberately. Because wrong guesses cost nothing, the fastest route out of a dead end is to sweep the grid for ordinary short words — not theme words — until you’ve earned a hint. Players who treat this as cheating usually take twice as long.
Hunt the spangram along the edges. It has to touch two opposite sides, so it must start on a border tile. Scanning the outer ring for plausible starts narrows the search enormously.
Look for the leftovers. Late in the puzzle, the unclaimed letters are your best clue. If seven tiles remain in one corner, the last word is seven letters and lives there — you’re no longer searching the whole grid.
Take the theme clue literally, then don’t. NYT theme clues often pun on two meanings. “Making waves” might mean the ocean, or hairstyling, or causing trouble. If one reading yields nothing after a minute, switch.
Frequently asked questions
What is the spangram in Strands?
The single word or phrase that spans the grid from one side to the opposite side and names the theme outright. It highlights yellow, while ordinary theme words highlight blue.
Does the spangram have to be one word?
No. Unlike the other answers it can be a phrase of two or more words, which is why letter counts sometimes look impossible at first.
Do wrong guesses hurt my score?
No. There’s no penalty and no limit — guessing freely is the intended way to play.
How do I earn a hint?
Find three valid non-theme words of four letters or more. The game then highlights all the letters of one theme word, though you still have to trace the path.
What time does Strands reset?
Midnight local time, matching Wordle and Connections.
