Is Your Phone Chinese or Global? How to Check the Model Number

How do you know whether a phone is a Chinese or global version? Look at the model number. It appears in Settings > About phone and on the box sticker, and it follows a pattern: Oppo and OnePlus global models start with CPH, Chinese ones start with P, and Xiaomi marks the region with the last letter.

This guide shows where to find it, how to decode it, and what else tells you which ROM a phone runs.

Is your Phone Chinese or Global

Where to Find the Model Number

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to About phone (on some phones it is under System or About device).
  3. Look for Model number or Device model.
  4. Compare it with the sticker on the box and with the seller’s listing.

Menu names differ slightly between brands and software versions. If you cannot find it, use the search box in Settings and type “model”.

How to Decode Model Numbers to know the Chinese or Global Variants:

Brand Global pattern Chinese pattern Example
Oppo and OnePlus Starts with CPH Starts with P OnePlus 15: CPH2747 global, PLK110 China (GSMArena)
Oppo Find X9 Pro CPH2791 PLG110 Both numbers listed by Wikipedia
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO Last letter G (reported convention) Last letter C (reported convention) POCO F7 Ultra 24122RKC7G vs Redmi K80 Pro 24122RKC7C
vivo and iQOO Not confirmed Not confirmed Check the spec sheet for your exact model

The Oppo and OnePlus logic is consistent across the phones we checked. The Xiaomi suffix is widely reported but it is a convention, not an official rule. For vivo and iQOO we could not confirm a pattern, so we left it blank. See our Chinese ROM vs Global ROM guide for the directory.

Other Ways to Tell if a Phone Is a Chinese ROM

  • No Play Store at first start. Chinese ROMs normally ship without Google services.
  • The software name. OnePlus phones show ColorOS in China and OxygenOS abroad.
  • Language options. Some Chinese ROMs have only English and Chinese, as Notebookcheck found for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
  • A charger in the box. Chinese boxes often include one, while European boxes often do not.
  • Chinese text in the system. Some Chinese characters remain even when English is available.

Check Before You Buy, Not After

Ask the seller for the exact model number and a photo of the box sticker before you pay. If the seller says “global version” but the number starts with P (Oppo or OnePlus), it is a Chinese model. For safety tips, read our safe-to-buy guide.

What to Do If You Already Own the Wrong Version

  • Chinese phone, you need Google apps: follow our Google services guide.
  • Chinese phone, you need eSIM: it will not be added by software, as our eSIM guide explains.
  • Worried about bands: compare the phone’s bands with your carrier’s in our bands guide.

A Quick Verification Routine in Three Minutes

Use this short routine on any phone you are about to buy or have just received:

  • Compare three numbers: the model number in Settings, on the box sticker and in the listing. They should match.
  • Check the software name in About phone, for example ColorOS or OxygenOS on OnePlus.
  • Open the app drawer and look for the Play Store and Google apps.
  • Check the language list in Settings for the languages you need.
  • Dial *#06# to see the IMEI and compare it with the box.

A phone that passes all five checks is what the seller says it is. If one fails, ask for an explanation before you keep the phone.
