Steam Deck Charging: Watts, Charger and Charge Time Explained
Steam Deck charging is simple once you know the numbers: Valve’s included charger is a 45W USB-C power supply, the LCD model has a 40Wh battery and the OLED model has a 50Wh battery.
This guide explains what charger to use, why a stronger charger will not speed things up, why a weak one can make the Deck charge painfully slowly, and how to fix a Deck that is not charging properly.
Steam Deck charging at a glance
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Included charger | 45W, USB-C, PD 3.0 |
| Steam Deck LCD battery | 40Wh |
| Steam Deck OLED battery | 50Wh |
| Minimum charger standard | USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.0 or newer |
| Speed on a non-PD charger | About 10W maximum |
These figures come from the secondary sources listed at the end of this article, because the search did not return Valve’s own support page. If you want to be certain for your unit, check the label on your charger and Valve’s support pages.

What wattage does the Steam Deck need?
The charger in the box is rated at 45W, and the same rating applies to both the LCD and OLED models. The Deck itself will not draw more than 45W, so a bigger charger gives you no extra speed.
One source says a 65W adapter gives maximum charging speed, while another says the Deck never pulls more than 45W whatever charger you use. Because of that disagreement, treat 45W as the target and anything above it as unnecessary, though harmless.
Why 45W does not mean 45W into the battery
While you are playing, part of that power runs the console. So the battery fills more slowly during play than when the Deck is asleep or switched off. If you want the fastest top-up, charge with the screen off.
Can I use a laptop or phone charger?
Often yes, as long as it supports USB Power Delivery 3.0 or newer. A charger that does not support PD limits the Deck to about 10W, which is slow enough that the battery may barely rise while you play a demanding game. If you are reaching for a charger you already own, look for “PD” on the label and a wattage figure of 45W or more. A 30W PD charger will work too, but will charge more slowly under load.
What about power banks?
A power bank works if it supports PD and can deliver enough watts. Check the output rating on the power bank itself. A low-output bank will charge the Deck slowly or not at all during play.

How long does the Steam Deck take to charge?
The time depends on the model, the charger and whether you are playing. The OLED’s battery is larger (50Wh against 40Wh), so with the same charger it takes proportionally longer to fill from empty. The fastest way to charge is with a 45W PD charger and the Deck asleep.
Steam Deck not charging? Quick fixes
- Check the charger type. A non-PD charger limits the Deck to about 10W.
- Try the original cable and charger. The cable that comes with the Deck’s charger is not detachable, so test with a known-good PD charger and cable if you are using your own.
- Plug into a wall socket. Some USB ports on monitors and hubs do not deliver enough power.
- Let the Deck sleep while charging. This frees up power for the battery.
- Restart the Deck. A quick restart can clear a stuck charging state.
- Check the port for dust or damage. A loose or dirty USB-C port is a common cause.
If none of these work, contact Valve’s support rather than opening the console yourself.

Frequently asked questions
How many watts does a Steam Deck charger need?
45W with USB PD 3.0 is what Valve includes. Higher wattage will not charge it faster.
How big is the Steam Deck battery?
40Wh on the LCD model and 50Wh on the OLED model.
Can I use a 65W laptop charger on the Steam Deck?
Generally yes if it supports PD. Sources disagree on whether it charges faster, with at least one stating the Deck never draws more than 45W.
Why is my Steam Deck charging so slowly?
The usual causes are a non-PD charger (about 10W), a low-output power bank, or playing a demanding game while charging.
Can I play while charging the Steam Deck?
Yes, but the battery fills more slowly because some of the power runs the Deck.
Does the OLED charge faster than the LCD?
Both use the same 45W charger. The OLED has the larger battery, so a full charge from empty takes longer.
Is the Steam Deck charger cable removable?
No, one source states the cable on the included charger is not detachable.
