GTA 6 Robberies Detailed: Rob “Pretty Much Anything” in Rockstar’s 30-Minute Demo (2026)

GTA 6 robberies are going to be a much bigger deal than in any previous Grand Theft Auto. In a full interview with IGN, Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson played about 30 minutes of the game and explained how crime works in Leonida, and the headline for GTA 6 robberies is simple: “You can rob pretty much anything.” The details come from IGN’s full sit-down interview with Nelson, built around roughly 30 minutes of hands-off demo footage.

Robbery is the gameplay loop

Nelson described GTA 6 robberies as “very important to the gameplay system loop,” a way to earn money between story missions. Players can hit targets as Jason and Lucia together or solo. Discussing GTA 6’s earlier Extended Look footage, he said a short sequence of robberies in that video represents “a HUGE amount of what you can and need to be doing in this game in between story missions.”

Money matters more in GTA 6 than before. At certain points, players will need to head into the open world and earn cash, by boosting cars or holding up businesses, before the story can continue.

GTA 6 robberies: what you can rob

GTA 5 limited free-roam holdups to small convenience stores, with the big scores locked behind scripted heist missions. GTA 6 blows that open. Nelson named shops, banks, and payday loan places as targets, and used a headphone store as his example: walk in, and instead of shopping, rob it.

During the demo, Nelson had planned to hit “a shop, or a bank, or payday loan place.” Then Jason spotted a police impound lot holding a car a fence had asked them to steal, and the plan changed on the spot, showing how dynamic opportunities can redirect a session.

Planning the score

Preparation matters. Nelson said a smart player parks a getaway vehicle outside before going in, though he deliberately skipped that step in the demo to see what would happen. Inside a store, he found a safe and hunted for its combination. He was carrying an explosive that would have opened it faster, but it would have damaged some of the valuables inside, so methodical GTA 6 robberies pay better than brute force.

Police gathered outside while he worked, and he escaped through a rear exit. Crimes are only reported when a witness sees them or an alarm triggers, so quiet approaches have real value. On foot, alleys are often the best escape from a three-star chase. Nelson framed it as a risk-reward choice: patience preserves the payout, while explosives get you out faster with less to show for it.

GTA 6 robberies: smarter heat and getaways

Cars are riskier than in past games. Stealing any car is no longer a single button press affair: an advanced tracker pings police if you drive too slowly, and damage lowers what a car fence will pay for a stolen vehicle. Your partner can drive the getaway while you shoot at pursuers, and Nelson described emergent moments like shooting out tires to block pursuing cruisers or beating a train across the tracks.
