New Mew redesign unveiled

The Pokémon Company has unveiled a new Mew redesign created for the 30th anniversary. Mew, the mythical Pokémon originally hidden in the code of the classic Game Boy games, is front and center in the anniversary celebrations, appearing across the TCG set, merchandise, and promotional material.

Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration set

The centerpiece for collectors is the Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration expansion. Its stars are a translucent Mew ex with semi-transparent card stock, a special Mewtwo ex, and a brand new Futuristic Rare rarity. The set also hides three RGB Mew secret cards in red, green, and blue by artist Yoshirotten, a tribute to the original Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue games. After months of speculation over leaked images, the RGB Mew cards are confirmed real.

The set launched on September 17 and will roll out in five product waves through December. The Pokémon Company says it is printing the set in higher numbers than previous releases, and early reports suggest pull rates for rare cards are more generous this time.

Products and prices

The anniversary lineup spans booster packs ($4.99), a Knockout Collection ($9.99), a Tech Sticker Collection ($14.99), an Elite Trainer Box ($49.99, or $59.99 for the Pokémon Center version), and an Ultra Premium Collection ($179.99) with 30 booster packs. Resale prices spiked immediately: the Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box was reselling for as much as $490 in early September, though it has since settled closer to $290.

More anniversary celebrations

The 30th anniversary goes beyond cards. Re-Ment’s Pokémon Terrarium Collection 10 is back with a 30th anniversary edition of six blind-box figures, which hit Japanese shelves on September 21 with a worldwide rollout expected in October. Pokémon has also teamed up with Hiroshi Fujiwara’s fragment design for an exclusive Pikachu and Mew collection debuting at ComplexCon Los Angeles in October. And on the digital side, the 30th Celebration expansion arrived in Pokémon TCG Live on September 15 with new Mew ex and Sylveon ex decks.

Looking ahead, the hype will kick into even higher gear next year with the launch of Pokémon Winds and Waves, the start of Generation 10.
