Windows 11 26H2 Is Rolling Out: WinUI Upgrades, Movable Taskbar, and How to Get It

Microsoft has started rolling out Windows 11 26H2, this year’s annual feature update, and it brings a fresh wave of WinUI interface upgrades along with the return of one of the most requested features in Windows 11 history. Here is everything new, including the WinUI redesigns, and how to get the update on your PC right now. Because it arrives as a small enablement package, most eligible PCs can finish the install in just a few minutes.

Windows 11 26H2 WinUI upgrades

The headline interface story of Windows 11 26H2 is WinUI. Microsoft has rebuilt the AutoPlay dialog with WinUI, giving it a modern look consistent with the rest of Windows 11, dark mode support, better text scaling, and notifications docked in the notification center. Microsoft has also started replacing the decades-old File Explorer Properties dialog with a modern WinUI version, and the Start menu has been rebuilt swapping React for WinUI 3. These changes make Windows 11 look and feel more consistent, and the legacy WinUI upgrades also bring better performance.

Because the new dialogs use modern WinUI controls, they also respect system settings such as accent colors and contrast themes more reliably than the legacy dialogs they replace.

The taskbar can move again

One of the most requested features is back: you can now move the taskbar to the top, left, or right of the screen, not just the bottom. Microsoft removed this when Windows 11 launched in 2021. A smaller taskbar option with compact icons has also returned. The option appears in Settings under Personalization in Windows 11 26H2, so you can reposition the taskbar without third party tools or registry edits. Combined with the compact icon mode, it gives ultrawide and multi monitor users more control over their desktop layout.

What else is new in Windows 11 26H2

Copilot integration across the system UI has been reduced after user backlash. The update is tuned for 8 GB RAM PCs with memory optimizations. In Windows 11 26H2, File Explorer gets productivity enhancements including AI actions for images and faster performance. Per-app privacy controls let you manage camera, microphone, and location access for individual desktop apps. Sound settings have been improved with volume activity indicators and hardware acceleration controls.

The memory optimizations target entry level laptops and tablets that ship with 8 GB of RAM, keeping background system processes leaner during everyday multitasking. The new per-app privacy controls also cover classic desktop applications, not just Store apps, which closes a long standing gap in Windows privacy settings.

How to get Windows 11 26H2 now

Windows 11 26H2 installs as a tiny enablement package (KB5121794, about 174KB) with a single restart, because versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same servicing branch. To get it: open Settings, go to Windows Update, turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available”, then click Check for updates and choose Download and install when Windows 11, version 26H2 appears. Microsoft is rolling it out in phases with safeguard holds for PCs with compatibility issues, so it may not appear immediately. ISOs are also available from Microsoft for clean installs. Note that devices on 26H1 cannot upgrade to 26H2.

If the update does not appear, confirm your PC is running a supported release and that no safeguard hold applies to your hardware. Businesses can also deploy the update through Windows Update for Business or download the ISO to create a bootable USB for clean installs.

Why you should not wait

Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions reach end of servicing on October 13, 2026. Installing Windows 11 26H2 resets your support clock: 24 months of updates for Home and Pro, 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Upgrading now also keeps your monthly security updates flowing without interruption once the older version stops being serviced. For most users, the install takes only a few minutes thanks to the enablement package.
