Chinese ROM vs Global ROM (2026): Differences, Model Numbers & Which to Buy
A Chinese ROM is the software a phone ships with when it is sold in China, and a Global ROM is the build for the rest of the world. The hardware is usually the same, but the software, Google services, languages, eSIM, network bands, updates and warranty are not.
This guide explains each difference, shows you how to read model numbers so you know which version you are buying, and links to our phone-by-phone comparisons.

Chinese ROM vs Global ROM at a Glance
| Chinese ROM | Global ROM | |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play and Google services | Not pre-installed; on most brands you switch on Google services in Settings and install the Play Store from the phone’s own app store | Built in |
| Languages | Varies by brand: English is available but some Chinese text stays; some phones have a full language pack, others only English | Full language support |
| eSIM | Often missing (for example the OnePlus 15, Find X9 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Ultra) | Supported on most flagships |
| Network bands | Some North American bands may be missing (B12, B13, B17 are examples) | Built for international networks |
| Updates | Often slower or shorter, and some brands do not publish a support period | Published, longer support (for example 6 years on the global Find X9 Pro) |
| Warranty | Usually valid only in China | Valid in the region where you buy |
| Price | Much cheaper | Higher |
| In the box | Charger often included | Charger often removed in Europe and North America |
What Is a Chinese ROM?
A Chinese ROM is the version of Android that a manufacturer prepares for the Chinese market. Because Google services are not available in mainland China, these builds ship without Google Play services, and they include Chinese apps and services instead. Brands give them different names. Oppo uses ColorOS everywhere, OnePlus uses ColorOS in China and OxygenOS abroad, Xiaomi uses HyperOS, and vivo and iQOO use OriginOS. According to the reports we found, the global iQOO 15 also runs OriginOS 6, but the Chinese version of OriginOS does not ship with Google Play services.
What Is a Global ROM?
A Global ROM is the build designed for markets outside China. It includes Google Mobile Services (the Play Store, Gmail, Maps and so on), supports many languages, meets regional regulations such as the European ones, and normally comes with an official warranty and a published update plan. Some brands also make smaller changes for each region, such as removing call recording in some countries.
The Biggest Differences, Explained
1. Google Play and Google services
Without Google services, apps that rely on them do not work until you turn them on. On Oppo, OnePlus, vivo and iQOO phones there is a built-in switch for Google services, and you then install the Play Store from the phone’s app store, according to Smartprix. Avoid random one-click “Google installer” APKs from unknown sites, which are riskier. Our guide on installing Google services on a Chinese ROM covers the steps.
2. Languages and apps
Language support differs by brand. Notebookcheck reports that the Chinese Oppo Find X9 Pro is multi-language from the factory, with English available and some Chinese characters left in places. For the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Notebookcheck says there is no multi-language package, so English is the only system language outside China.
3. eSIM and network bands
The Chinese OnePlus 15, Oppo Find X9 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Ultra do not support eSIM. As for bands, Gizmochina says Chinese models usually lack North American bands such as B12, B13 and B17, which hurts coverage in weak-signal areas, but outside North America you will see almost no difference. Wikipedia lists the band differences for the Find X9 Pro.
4. Updates and warranty
Most brands require you to send a Chinese phone to China for warranty repairs. Gizmochina also reports that the global OnePlus 15 gets four major Android updates and six years of security patches, while the Chinese version’s security patches lag by a year. For the Find X9 Pro, Notebookcheck says the imported phone does not have the official six-year update guarantee.
5. Battery and charger
Hardware is mostly identical, but not always. Some brands make the battery smaller outside China. Wikipedia’s Xiaomi 17 page lists the Xiaomi 17 Ultra at 6,800 mAh in China and 6,000 mAh globally. The OnePlus 15 is an exception, with a 7,300 mAh battery in every version. Chinese boxes often include a charger, while Europe and North America often remove it.
How to Read Phone Model Numbers
The model number tells you which version of a phone you are looking at. You can find it in Settings > About phone and on the box sticker. These patterns apply to the brands we have checked:
- Oppo and OnePlus: global models start with CPH and Chinese models start with P (for example PLK110 vs CPH2747).
- Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: the last letter of the model number usually marks the region. We have seen reports that C stands for China, G for global and I for India. The global Xiaomi 17 Ultra was reported as 2512BPNDAG, but that number is not confirmed.
- vivo and iQOO: check the build name. Chinese units run OriginOS without Google services.
Model Number Directory
These are the model numbers we could confirm. A blank cell means we could not confirm it, and we would rather leave it empty than guess.
| Phone | Chinese model | Global model | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| OnePlus 15 | PLK110 | CPH2747 (CPH2745 and CPH2749 also reported) | GSMArena |
| Oppo Find X9 | PLJ110 | CPH2797 | Wikipedia |
| Oppo Find X9 Pro | PLG110 | CPH2791 | Wikipedia |
| Xiaomi 17 Ultra | Not confirmed | 2512BPNDAG (reported, unconfirmed) | Notebookcheck |
The Wikipedia page for the Find X9 series lists both numbers but does not say which is which. We matched them with the P versus CPH convention, which both Notebookcheck and GSMArena use when they report these devices.

Should You Buy a Chinese ROM Phone?
Buy the Chinese version if price matters most, you do not rely on eSIM, you can handle installing Google services, and you accept that warranty repairs may be difficult. Buy the global version if you want a warranty you can use locally, eSIM, longer updates and Google services out of the box. Chinese ROM vs Global ROM FAQ
Is a Chinese ROM phone the same hardware as the global one?
Usually yes. The OnePlus 15 and Find X9 Pro use the same core hardware in both versions. Exceptions include the battery on some phones, such as the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
Can I use Google Play on a Chinese ROM?
Not by default. Most brands have a built-in switch for Google services, and you then install the Play Store from the phone’s app store.
Do Chinese ROM phones support eSIM?
The three phones we checked do not, so check before you buy if you depend on it.
Will a Chinese ROM phone work on my network?
Most work well outside North America. Check the band list for your carrier, especially in the US and Canada.
Can I flash a Global ROM on a Chinese phone?
Sometimes. It depends on the brand and on whether the bootloader unlocks. The OnePlus 15 unlocks easily, but the Xiaomi 17 Ultra does not.
How do I know if my phone is a Chinese or global version?
Open Settings > About phone, read the model number and compare it with the directory above. A phone with no Play Store is usually a Chinese build.
Is the warranty valid abroad?
Usually not. Brands typically require you to send the phone to China, and one source says full coverage on the Find X9 Pro applies only to purchases within Europe.
Do Chinese phones get updates?
They do, but the timing and length can differ. Some brands do not publish a support period for their Chinese models.
Why are Chinese versions cheaper?
Official prices in China are lower, and the phones often include a charger. Import sellers add shipping, so check the final cost.
Which brands are easiest to import?
From the reports we read, Oppo is easy because of its multi-language builds and Android Auto support, and OnePlus because of its unlockable bootloader. Xiaomi is harder because of its locked bootloader and English-only build.
