Mass Effect 3 Release Date by Region and Platform

BioWare announced the date at E3 on June 6, 2011, and for once there were no further slips. The rollout looked like this:

  • PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (North America): March 6, 2012
  • PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (Australia): March 8, 2012
  • PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (Europe): March 9, 2012
  • Wii U (Mass Effect 3: Special Edition, North America): November 18, 2012
  • Wii U (Europe): November 30, 2012
  • Wii U (Japan): December 5, 2012
  • Mass Effect Trilogy box set (PC, Xbox 360): November 6, 2012
  • Mass Effect Trilogy box set (PS3): December 4, 2012
  • Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PC, PS4, Xbox One): May 14, 2021

The March launch mattered for one specific reason: it was the first time a Mass Effect game launched on PlayStation and Xbox on the same day. The original Mass Effect was an Xbox 360 exclusive in 2007, and PlayStation players had waited over a year for Mass Effect 2. With Mass Effect 3, every platform started the Reaper war together.

Announced in 2010, Delayed Once, Dated at E3

Mass Effect 3 was revealed on December 11, 2010, with a teaser trailer at the Spike Video Game Awards showing a lone soldier in a ruined London clock tower. At that point BioWare was targeting a holiday 2011 launch, putting it head to head with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

That window did not survive the spring. On May 4, 2011, executive producer Casey Hudson announced on the game’s Facebook page that Mass Effect 3 would slip into the first three months of 2012, saying the team was “laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series.” A month later at E3 2011, EA’s press conference locked in the exact day: March 6, 2012. The game hit that date with no further delays.

What Made This Launch Different

Three things set the Mass Effect 3 launch apart from its predecessors. First, it was a true multi-platform day-one release, as covered above. Second, the Xbox 360 version shipped with Kinect voice support, letting players issue squad orders and pick dialogue options by speaking, a feature EA heavily promoted at E3. Third, it launched with the series’ first multiplayer: a four-player co-op mode called Galaxy at War, which received five free content packs over the following year. BioWare also sold an N7 Collector’s Edition with an art book, comic, soundtrack and in-game items, while the From Ashes story DLC, adding the Prothean squadmate Javik, was available from day one.

The DLC Year and the Ending Fix

Mass Effect 3’s post-launch story is inseparable from its ending. The finale’s reception was so divided that BioWare released the Extended Cut on June 26, 2012, a free download that expanded the endings with additional scenes and an epilogue. The single-player DLC then continued for a full year: Leviathan (August 28, 2012) explored the Reapers’ origins, Omega (November 27, 2012) returned players to the Omega station with Aria T’Loak, and Citadel (March 5, 2013) closed the trilogy with a fan-favorite farewell to Shepard’s crew, almost exactly one year after launch.

Mass Effect 3 in the Legendary Edition (2021)

The remastered trilogy was announced on N7 Day, November 7, 2020, and BioWare confirmed the date on February 2, 2021: Mass Effect Legendary Edition launched on May 14, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S through forward compatibility. The package contains all three games and over 40 DLC packs, so Mass Effect 3 arrives with From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega, Citadel and the Extended Cut already included. Two things did not make the jump: the co-op multiplayer is not in the Legendary Edition at all, and the remaster is a visual and performance upgrade rather than a remake, running on the same Unreal Engine 3 foundation. One nice touch for longtime players: the default female Shepard face that debuted in Mass Effect 3 was backported across all three games.

How to Play Mass Effect 3 in 2026

For almost everyone, the Legendary Edition is the version to buy in 2026: one purchase covers the whole trilogy with every story DLC, it runs at up to 4K and high frame rates on modern hardware, and it is sold on Steam, the EA app, PlayStation and Xbox, as well as being included with EA Play. Choose the original 2012 release only if you want the co-op multiplayer, which still runs on PC and Xbox (the Xbox 360 version is playable on newer Xbox consoles via backward compatibility), or the Wii U version’s GamePad features.

The harder question is what comes next for the series. A new Mass Effect was in development at BioWare for years, but EA has now shut the studio down and cancelled the project, which makes Mass Effect 3 and its Legendary Edition the effective end of Shepard’s story for the foreseeable future. We covered the closure in detail in our report on EA closing BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect.

Why was Mass Effect 3 delayed from 2011 to 2012?

BioWare originally targeted a holiday 2011 release. On May 4, 2011, executive producer Casey Hudson announced the move to the first quarter of 2012 so the team could make the game “the biggest, boldest and best game in the series.” The final date, March 6, 2012, was confirmed at E3 in June 2011 and held firm.

When did Mass Effect 3 come out on Wii U?

Mass Effect 3: Special Edition was a Wii U launch title. It released on November 18, 2012 in North America, November 30, 2012 in Europe and December 5, 2012 in Japan. Developed with Straight Right, it added GamePad features and an interactive comic covering the first two games so new players could set their story choices.

Does Mass Effect Legendary Edition include Mass Effect 3 multiplayer?

No. The Legendary Edition is single-player only across all three games. It includes Mass Effect 3’s full campaign and every story DLC, including the Extended Cut, but the Galaxy at War co-op mode was not carried over. To play the multiplayer today you need the original 2012 release on PC or Xbox.

Is Mass Effect 3 the last game in the series?

It is the last game in Shepard’s trilogy. A standalone follow-up, Mass Effect: Andromeda, followed in 2017 with a new cast, and a further sequel was in development at BioWare until EA closed the studio in 2026 and cancelled it.
