BioWare Shutdown: EA Closes the Studio and Cancels Next Mass Effect (2026)
Electronic Arts is closing BioWare, the legendary studio behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series, and canceling the next Mass Effect game. The news broke on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, when EA chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber told employees in an email that the company would shut the studio down and cut jobs as it narrows its game slate, according to reporting by Reuters.

Around 400 jobs are being cut across EA, roughly 3 percent of the publisher’s workforce, with about 50 of those losses at BioWare, Bloomberg reported. The company’s studio in Edmonton, Canada, where BioWare was founded in 1995, will close its doors. The small team that had been in early development on the next Mass Effect game has been disbanded.
BioWare confirmed the closure publicly. “For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio,” the developer said in a statement. “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”
Why EA Is Closing BioWare
The decision caps a difficult stretch for the once dominant RPG maker. BioWare’s multiplayer shooter Anthem bombed after its 2019 launch and shut down earlier this year, according to Engadget, while Dragon Age: The Veilguard reached 1.5 million players after its October 2024 release, about 50 percent below EA’s own expectations, according to Dot Esports.
EA had already shrunk the studio sharply over the past two years, moving developers to other teams and laying off others. Fewer than 100 people remained at BioWare, and the studio had focused entirely on the next Mass Effect since early 2025.
That game was meant to be BioWare’s comeback. It was first teased at The Game Awards in December 2020 with a trailer showing an older Liara T’Soni finding a piece of N7 armor on a snowy planet. In 2022, the studio hired Mary DeMarle, the narrative lead behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, as senior narrative director. But the project never moved past early development, and now it is canceled outright.
The timing is tied to EA’s new ownership. The publisher went private in August 2026 in a $55 billion deal led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund alongside Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, according to Reuters. EA says it will now concentrate on fewer, bigger titles, including Battlefield, Apex Legends, and its sports franchises.
What It Means for Players
For Mass Effect fans, the message is final: the next chapter in the series, teased for nearly six years, will never arrive. BioWare’s existing games remain on sale, including the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect Legendary Edition. The studio’s legacy is secure either way. EA acquired BioWare in 2007, and its games, including Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age, rank among the most celebrated RPGs ever made, according to Kotaku.
RPG fans still have plenty to play. Cyberpunk 2077 just received its Edgerunners 2 update and Jagex recently announced RuneScape 4, its first Unreal Engine MMO.
EA, meanwhile, is redirecting its resources. The publisher will continue development of a new Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel’s Iron Man, while Respawn and DICE co-develop a new Star Wars Battlefront game, according to Polygon. The team behind skate., Full Circle, is being cut down to a smaller and more focused studio, and EA is pausing work on a Sims project codenamed Project Lotus to prioritize another initiative dubbed Project Evergreen. EA says it will help affected workers explore other roles inside the company.
