How Octordle works

Octordle is Wordle multiplied by eight. You solve eight five-letter words simultaneously, and every guess you type is applied to all eight boards at once. You get 13 guesses to finish all of them.

The maths is what makes it interesting. Eight words in thirteen guesses means an average of 1.6 guesses per word — far fewer than you’d need solving them one at a time. You cannot afford to chase a single board; you have to feed information to all eight.

Colour feedback works exactly as in Wordle: green for right letter and position, yellow for right letter wrong position, grey for absent. A new set appears daily at midnight local time.

The strategy that actually matters

Spend your first three guesses on coverage, not solving. This is the single biggest difference from Wordle. Open with three words that between them cover fifteen distinct common letters — something like SLATE, CRIMP, DOUGH. Solve nothing, learn everything. Players who try to close a board early almost always run out of guesses at the far end.

Then bank the boards that are nearly done. After three coverage words, some boards will have four greens. Close those immediately — each solved board is one fewer thing to track, and the mental load of eight simultaneous grids is the real difficulty.

Save the sparse boards for last, deliberately. A board showing almost all grey after three guesses contains uncommon letters. Rather than guessing at it, use a fourth word loaded with the letters you haven’t tested — J, K, V, W, X, Y, Z — and it will often resolve in one.

Never guess a word you know is wrong just to test letters, late on. Early, that’s correct play. After guess nine it isn’t — you no longer have the budget.

Reading the hints above

Our hints are built to be used selectively rather than read straight through:

  • Repeated letters — tells you how many of the eight words contain a doubled letter, the most common cause of a failed board.
  • Vowel count — flags any word that is unusually vowel-heavy or vowel-light.
  • Starting and ending letters — the strongest hint short of the answer.
  • Uncommon letters — whether Q, Z, X or J appear anywhere today.

Most players who are one board short only need the uncommon-letters hint.

Octordle modes

Beyond Classic there are several variants, each with its own daily puzzle: Sequence, where the boards unlock one at a time; Rescue, where a wrong guess costs you dearly; and Free, an untimed practice mode with unlimited plays. The answers on this page are for Classic, which is what most people mean by “today’s Octordle”.

Frequently asked questions

How many guesses do you get in Octordle?
Thirteen, to solve all eight words.

What is a good Octordle opening?
Any three words covering fifteen distinct common letters. The specific words matter far less than the coverage and than using the same opening every day so you can read the results quickly.

What time does Octordle reset?
Midnight in your local time zone. The countdown above tracks your own clock.

Is Octordle free?
Yes, and no account is required.

Are these answers for Classic or another mode?
Classic. Sequence, Rescue and Free run separate daily puzzles with different words.
