How Phrazle works
Phrazle takes the Wordle format and applies it to a whole phrase rather than a single word. You get six attempts to identify a hidden phrase, and the board shows you how many words it contains and how long each one is before you start.
The tile colours carry more information than Wordle’s, because there are two kinds of “wrong place”:
- Green — right letter, right position, right word.
- Yellow — the letter belongs in that word, but in a different position.
- Purple — the letter is in the phrase, but in a different word entirely.
- Grey — not in the phrase at all.
That purple tile is the one newcomers misread. It is telling you the letter is live but you have it in the wrong word, which is a genuinely useful clue once you start trusting it.
Your guess must contain the correct number of words, each of roughly the right length. You cannot probe with an unrelated single word the way you can in Wordle.
Three habits that help
Guess a common phrase, not a sensible sentence. Phrazle answers are idioms, sayings and set phrases — “call it a day”, “back to square one” — not descriptive statements. If your guess sounds like something you’d write rather than something you’d say, it’s the wrong shape.
Use word length as your primary clue. A one-letter word is A or I. A two-letter word in an idiom is overwhelmingly likely to be OF, TO, IT, IN, ON or UP. A three-letter word is often THE. Filling those structural slots costs nothing and shapes everything else.
Treat purple tiles as position data, not letter data. A purple L on word two means there is an L somewhere in words one, three or four. Combined with the length pattern, that often pins it exactly.
Why there are two puzzles a day
Phrazle releases a morning round and an afternoon round, which is unusual among daily word games and part of why it holds attention — you get a second go without waiting until tomorrow. Both are on this page, and we update each one as it appears rather than waiting to publish them together.
One quirk worth knowing: the puzzle numbering was reset to #1 in October 2025, so the number shown in-game no longer reflects how long the game has been running.
