Xbox Disc-to-Digital Goes Live for All Users in 2026

xbox disc to digital bridges the long-standing gap between physical and digital game libraries. Players can claim a digital license for a supported disc-based game by inserting the disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Once the digital entitlement is registered to the account, players get the benefits of a digital copy, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported, while the physical disc itself continues to work exactly as it always has, according to the official announcement on Xbox Wire. The Xbox division is also affected by Microsoft’s wider workforce changes, with the company offering voluntary exit packages to up to 60,000 employees.
The feature was first revealed on August 26, 2026 by Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president of next generation, in an Xbox Wire post titled “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.” Xbox Insiders began testing it on August 31, 2026. After roughly a month of preview feedback, Microsoft pushed the feature out to the wider Xbox audience. Xbox engineer Eden Marie confirmed on X that the feature “should now be available to everyone, not just Insiders,” adding that players who do not see it yet may need to restart their consoles, according to Pure Xbox.
How Xbox disc to digital works
Claiming a digital license with xbox disc to digital is straightforward. Insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a console with a disc drive, then launch the game. That is the entire verification step: the console registers a digital entitlement for the title on your account.
Once claimed, the game carries the perks of a digital copy. Where supported, that means Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming access, so a disc you bought years ago can suddenly be playable on more screens. Importantly, nothing is taken away from the physical copy: the disc keeps working exactly as before, so you still own and can use the physical version alongside the new digital license. Official Xbox support pages note the feature requires a supported console with a disc drive and an eligible Xbox One or Series X game disc.

Which games are eligible
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support xbox disc to digital, and Microsoft says it launched with thousands of titles, with more being added over time, according to Xbox Wire. Not every title is available at launch, since publisher participation varies. Some sources reported that more than 1,500 games were already supported as of September 2026, with publishers such as Ubisoft on board and more expected to follow.
Why it matters for Xbox players
For years, Xbox players have been split between physical and digital libraries. Disc owners watched digital buyers enjoy instant switching, Play Anywhere, and cloud streaming, while digital collectors sometimes envied the permanence and resale value of a physical copy. Disc-to-Digital effectively gives physical collectors the best of both worlds: keep the disc, gain the digital perks.
It also arrives at a meaningful moment for hardware. With Xbox continuing to sell consoles without disc drives, including the Xbox Series S, players upgrading from a disc-based console can now carry their physical collections forward in digital form instead of rebuying the same games. Microsoft has framed the feature as part of its broader commitment to game preservation, writing that “preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever.”
Sony is moving the same direction โ Ken Kutaragi has backed the plan to end PlayStation disc production for a digital-only future from January 2028.
