Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access Starts October 16, DMZ Follows October 20 (2026)

Three dates every Call of Duty fan needs to know

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is turning one launch into three separate events. Activision has confirmed Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access for digital pre-orders, starting Friday, October 16, 2026, a full week before the game’s worldwide launch on October 23, while the new DMZ extraction mode opens early on Tuesday, October 20. The schedule, laid out this week on the official Call of Duty blog and Xbox Wire, means pre-order players get the story first, then the extraction mode, then the full multiplayer launch alongside everyone else.

Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access: how to get in

The early access windows are tied to pre-orders, not an open beta. Buying any digital edition of Modern Warfare 4, Standard or Vault, on any platform unlocks the campaign on October 16 and DMZ on October 20. That covers PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Battle.net, Steam, and Xbox on PC. The Standard Edition costs $69.99 and the Vault Edition $99.99, according to the Xbox store listing. Pre-ordering also brings immediate bonuses: the Inner Circuit Weapon Blueprint, the Hunter Killer Operator Skin (usable right away in Black Ops 7 and Warzone), and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack. One notable detail from the store listing: Modern Warfare 4 will not be available with Game Pass at launch, so unlike this week’s Battlefield 6 Game Pass launch, there is no subscription shortcut into MW4.

The story: Korea burns, Price goes rogue

The campaign picks up after the assassination of General Shepherd at the end of Modern Warfare III. Task Force 141 has been disbanded, and Ghost and Gaz now have orders to capture or kill their former captain. John Price is waging a personal shadow war, staying one step ahead of the people hunting him, while CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell stays in contact even as she grows wary of his methods. In a surprise turn, Valeria Garza, the Las Almas cartel leader known as El Sin Nombre, becomes Price’s unlikely ally against a bigger threat.

The other half of the story is the invasion itself. North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, and players fight through it as Private Park Hyun Jun and a young squad of South Korean soldiers holding collapsing front lines. US and South Korean marines join the ground combat and an amphibious assault, and the two storylines eventually collide as Price’s pursuit intersects with the forces driving the invasion. Hanging over everything is a villain known as The Archer and a weapon that could overturn the world order, according to Gematsu’s breakdown of the campaign trailer.

DMZ gets its second chance

DMZ, the open-world extraction mode, is where Activision is making its biggest bet. The mode debuted as a free-to-play beta inside Warzone with 2022’s Modern Warfare II and underwhelmed, with low replay value and unaddressed teaming problems. Infinity Ward says it took those lessons to heart for Modern Warfare 4’s version, which the studio describes as the definitive extraction shooter experience.

The October 20 early access window gives pre-order players three days to learn the loop before launch: infiltrate the North Korean-occupied DMZ region of Hajin, loot, craft, complete objectives, and reach exfil with your rewards intact, against AI combatants and rival human squads. Everything feeds a Forward Operating Base that grows as you complete operations, with DMZ Orders guiding progression, a shared stash, a firing range, a vendor with rotating stock, and dog tags that rank from Steel to Onyx across Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist trees. Four operator kills mark you as Wanted, revealing your rough position to rivals, and a 3D printer crafts consumables, vests, and base upgrades from level 2.

What it means for the 2026 shooter race

The timing is the story as much as the content. Battlefield 6 launched on October 10 and joined Game Pass on October 13, which puts the two biggest military shooters of the year head to head within the same month. Activision’s answer is the staggered rollout: campaign players get a full week to finish the story and talk about it before multiplayer arrives, and DMZ gets its own spotlight on October 20. For players still deciding, our Call of Duty weapon tier list breaks down the current Black Ops 7 meta while you wait.

Mark the calendar: October 16 for the campaign, October 20 for DMZ, October 23 for everything. The war for the Korean Peninsula starts in four days.
